On Friday 11 November, Musiio by SoundCloud co-founder Hazel Savage was named Entrepreneur of the Year at the Women In Music Awards 2022. The awards celebrated the achievements of 12 game-changing executives and artists, and even more Roll of Honour inductees.
The award is the third for Musiio in 2022, following Fast Company naming Musiio one of the top 10 most innovative companies in music.
In an interview with Music Week, Hazel said of her win, “It's amazing. It feels a little surreal, but it's the biggest thing I have ever won, and I am truly humbled and delighted by it.”
In her acceptance speech in front of 1000 industry leaders, she emphasised how important the music industry is to her.
“I don’t really identify with the term entrepreneur… I only ever wanted to build something in the music industry.”
In four short years, under Hazel’s leadership, Musiio grew from a two-person start-up alongside co-founder Aron Pettersson, to an industry-leading music tech company that would be acquired by SoundCloud in 2022.
She also explained why SoundCloud was the right fit for Musiio. “We had many approaches over the years, and for me, two things were key. Who will keep the tech in the market and available to buy (not buy us and turn the tap off)? And who has the chance to become a world-class holistic music company? SoundCloud did and is this company."
The high-powered awards show crowd also heard from SoundCloud president Eliah Seton who presented the award for Entrepreneur of the Year.
He said, “She is visionary, she radiates energy, she is radically candid, empathetic and constructive, driven by making those around her the best versions of themselves. Just months into joining the Leadership Team at SoundCloud after the acquisition, Hazel is already leaving her mark on our business and on our team.”
